It’s a semi-low volatility strategy that will keep you at the table longer albeit less chance of being a big winner compared to the odds bet. Playing like this is so far from the worst you can do at the table. So OP, the dealer is correct in showing you the odds bet, but ultimately it’s totally up to you. In fact, come/line bets are the cheapest second to odds. There are far worse bets to make at the table via props/bonus bets, than a few come bets. I personally wouldn’t play like OP, but only because I have my own preferences and strategy. Place bets are like 200-300% more expensive house advantage than a come bet.
